National DNA Day commemorates the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 and the discovery of DNA's double helix by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953. It became official with the 108th Congress in 2003 when April was designated as "Human Genome Month," and April 25 "DNA Day." A lot of scientific discoveries and technical developments took place before the Human Genome Project, and continue to take place today at a rapid pace.
